SUNBLOCK / SPF
The Unbiased Truth
Exposure to UV radiation causes damage to the epidermis of the skin and the thermal injury to the underlying structures leads to increased production of Melanin which darkens the skin, allowing partial absorption of the sun's rays, protecting it from future damage from repeat exposure.
The sun caused your skin to darken, which helps protect the skin from damage.
Sounds good. . . Unfortunately Chronic sun exposure leads to decreased elasticity and yes. . . those unwanted wrinkles. Whereas, too much Acute sun exposure during a limited time, known as a sun burn, leads to possible cancerous growths.
How does Sunblock actually work?
It works by creating a chemical barrier, much like a hat or a shirt is a physical barrier.
What does SPF mean?
Sunblock number connotes the "formula" that was devised for sunblock creams. SPF- sun protection factor It is as follows. The sun exposure causing the average person's skin to become pink is 15 minutes, labeled as X. SPF 30 connotes 30X of sun blockade. 30 multiplied by 15 gives us 450 minutes of protection. 60 minutes in an hour- over 7 hours of blockade. The sun's damage is greatest between 11-2, therefore, one only really needs 3 hours of blockade, 180 minutes, so an SPF of 15 is the right level for the average person. 15 X 15 = 225 minutes, 3.5 hours.
Anything over SPF 30 has no extra value. . .so save your money. . . buy yourself something nice.
