WRINKLES
The Unbiased Truth
Wrinkles have many causes:
1) Sun exposure is probably the main culprit, which can be prevented.
2) Smoking is yet another avoidable cause of damage to the skin.
3) Genetics play a part, however, we can't pick our parents.
4) Gravity and sleeping on one side probably play a very small part in the creation of wrinkles.
Many companies discuss decreased elasticity leading to wrinkles and sunken areas and this is true, but decreased elasticity is caused by sun exposure, smoking, environmental damage and genetics. Products claim to replace collagen and elastin and there is nothing farther from the truth. NO PRODUCT APPLIED TO THE SKIN WILL PREVENT WRINKLES.
SkinCare products can MINIMALLY "improve" the appearance of the exterior of the skin and VERY FINE lines. Sunblock helps to prevent the damage from UV light (the Sun). Deep creases around the mouth and chin, lines under the eyes and sunken cheeks are caused by Decreased volume, necessitating VOLUME REPLACEMENT, which can only be performed via procedure at a reputable physician's office.
1) Take a sheet of typing paper, curl it several times, but careful not to crease it - open the sheet and the sheet is without creases. If you were to continue this same behavior for 50 years- the paper will remain without creases, just as your Skin will look with the preventative measures available only at your reputable physician's office. Unfortunately, no cream, ointment or oil can PREVENT the formation of a line. Take another sheet, fold it in half and crease it, repeat this several times. Open the sheet and you have a permanent crease, or line or wrinkle. If you were to continue this behavior every 30 seconds for 50 years and you are left with a very creased paper. The only way to remove the crease is to pull the paper taught, hence the lift in the surgical face lift. Leading us to the next issue.
2) Decreased volume and decreased elasticity leads to "excess skin." People are familiar with the term, osteoporosis- bone loss in the legs, ankles, wrists, measured by your doctor with calipers and a bone density scan. Osteoporosis occurs anywhere there is "bone." The skull is composed of Bone and the skin of the face is supported by this bone, mostly in the center of the face and in the upper region. As we age, this bone, just as the bone throughout the rest of your body is slowly but progressively reabsorbed. Subsequently, wrinkles appear around the center of the face and around the eyes.
Analogy: A Grape is full of volume, while a raisin is simply a deflated or volume-less Grape. The size of a person's head shrinks 20% from the age of 25- 55. Mystery solved.
Avoid environmental elements - Sun and Smoking. Protect your skin with Sunblock. Start a Preventative Prescription regimen with your ACCP physician. Of course it is easier and more convenient to go to the salon or the hair dresser or even the department store that also sells clothes, BUT when was EASY the BEST solution. Only TIME will tell if you made the right decision.
Once again, attempting to avoid being the bearer of bad news, but wrinkles can only be repaired at a reputable physician's office. A QUICK TEST to assess your current skincare professional's fund of knowledge:
Lift your eyes and ask him or her to describe the common process involved that leads to this most common of all wrinkles.
The answer is that the nerve releases a chemical that causes the muscle to contract. More specifically, Acetylcholine is released by the axon of a nerve, crosses the neuromuscular junction, binds to the Acetylcholine Receptor found on the Muscle fiber, causing a cascade of events leading to muscular contraction, and the DYNAMIC wrinkle that you don't like to see. An alternative approach is to simply replace the volume that is lost over time and prevent the creases with facial relaxation injectables in the FCDS office. Cosmetic surgeons come from all medical/surgical disciplines.
